Art is no longer a plaything exclusively enjoyed by artists and the aristocracy. With the rapid development, popularization, and spread of art and culture both domestically and internationally, an increasing number of people are stepping into art museums of all sizes. As one of the significant forms of contemporary art, interactive art aims to achieve artistic expression through the interaction between installations and viewers. However, the conceptual nature of contemporary art inherently places emphasis on the artist’s consciousness in interactive works, while viewers often assume the role of deciphering.
Our artwork, “Iris,” is an abstract painting generation art installation based on user selfies. It captures photographs of people’s irises through a camera and utilizes algorithms including facial keypoint detection, pattern and contour extraction to merge the brushstrokes of painting masters like Van Gogh and Zao Wou-Ki. This results in the creation of stylized abstract paintings. Using a mechanical device constructed with Lego bricks and employing spray painting techniques, we reshape the character traits interpreted by the “iris” on large sheets of paper. Through this interactive installation, viewers are guided to discover and deconstruct themselves, ultimately showcasing their individuality in a completely new way.
